The latest trend in fitness recovery is an unconventional one. A popular method used by top athletes is now being introduced in health clubs and spas around the UK. Originally appearing in clinics, it gained popularity as the benefits were broad and helped those that weren’t athletes; it has even been used by arthritis sufferers.

Cryotherapy works by sending the blood around the body to the brain and core in a process called vasoconstriction. Once vasodilation happens, the blood, now enriched with oxygen, nutrients and enzymes recirculates the body and goes back into peripheral tissues.

Cryotherapy introduces temperatures of -130°C, even colder than Antarctica (-60°C)

Whole body cryostimulation at ultra-low temperatures was first introduced by Professor T Yamauchi in Japan to treat rheumatoid arthritis. However, in the 1980’s, professors in Germany built upon this treatment as is now used for recovery in modern times.

Proven benefits of cryotherapy that have come from research:

1. Speeds up rehabilitation
2. Reduces muscle fatigue, pain and inflammation
3. Improves fitness performance
4. Increase mobility
5. Promotes healing
6. Promotes relaxation
7. Enhances lymph drainage
8. Increase energy levels
9. Boosts adrenaline and endorphins
10. Improves eczema
